The gear on the crank is plastic and the one on the the oil pump is metal.I think that the shaft on the pump gets gummed up and the extra friction rips the crank gear.I have heard that this is less likely to happen if the motor is ran a lot. This is probably the most likely thing that will kill a 175 .There is a web site called Scream and Fly that has forum for Mercury enthusists . These guys are mostly Prop guys and a lot of them are racers the consensus there is that you are crazy to run the oil pump especially at high RPM.
I lost a 175 to oil pump failure and it was a low hour motor. I bought one down in Washington for parts and it too had suffered oil pump failure. The input shaft on the pump broke and the engine over revved stripping the oil pump gear. The guy fixed the pump and went for a rip and the engine seized 15 minutes later.
I can see no advantage to oil inj on a 175. As you know you cannot idle them very long or they will overheat. You need 3000 RPM to plane and once your motor hits that speed the oil inj will be inj at 40/1 anyway. So just premix at 40/1 and play it safe.
